To be honest, this is one of those projects that didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted. I was trying to replicate a pinecone hedgehog I had made a few years ago, but it just didn’t turn out as good as the other one had. Oh well, in my eyes, it’s still too cute to throw away, and it was fun making it!
To make this project, you’ll need:
- Light brown paper (tissue paper looks so much nicer if you have it on hand)
- Two small black or brown beads
- A pinecone (of course 🙂 )
- Scissors
- A hot glue gun
- A black or brown marker
- A pencil
To start off, take a look at your pinecone and try to locate a central prong near the top that will serve as a nose. Once you’ve indentified one, tear/cut out some of the surrounding prongs to allow for the surrounding depressions in the hedgehog’s face. (Basically you’re trying to make the nose stick out, while the rest of the face slants back towards the body)
Next, take your paper and cut several long, skinny strips out of it (about 1/4 in. thick or even less). Take these long strips and measure them on your pinecone. You’ll want to cut them so that they’re long enough to span the gaps between the nose prong and the support prongs. (You can just cut the strips to size as you’re gluing them on if you want; that’s what I did 😉 )
Time to break out that glue gun! Take one of your paper strips and glue one end to the nose prong, and the other end to a nearby support prong. Repeat this process with two more strips to make a sort of triangle design.
Glue a few more strips on to continue building your frame…
And some more…
Until the whole face is filled in! 😀
Now, continue by cutting off any excess paper around the edges of the face that you don’t care for.
Once that’s done it’s time for my favorite part—the detail work! 🙂 Draw a hedgehog paw (don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect) on a piece of paper, fold the paper in half (so that you’ll be cutting out two paws), and color the paws darker with your marker.
Draw a nose and mouth on your little friend, glue on the eyes and paws, and he’s finished! I just love hedgehogs, don’t you? Hope you’ll have some fun with this too! 😉
