Gardening season is nearing its end for most of us, which means it’s the perfect time to collect any last minute seeds! Okra seeds are one of the easiest kinds of seeds to collect; read on to learn how. 🙂
Typically, okra is harvested when it is about 2-6 in. long. However, if you’re wanting to collect seeds from a pod, you’ll want to let it continue growing on the plant until it dries up and splits on the end; like this:
Once your pod is ready, cut it off the plant and break it open over a plate to let the seeds fall out.
Continue splitting the pod apart until all the seeds have fallen out…
Once that’s done, if you’re sure your seeds are dry, go ahead and dump them in an envelope…
Label…
And store in a jar in a cool, dry, dark place like your pantry.
And that’s it—that’s all there is to it!😁 Told ya it was easy!
Here are a few extra tips I’d like to mention:
#1- For maximum okra harvest, wait until near the end of the growing season before selecting pods for seed harvesting. Leaving the pods on the plant till they reach full maturity can slow the production of other pods.
#2- You can make your own DIY seed envelopes rather easily by simply cutting up a regular letter-size envelope and taping any exposed edges!
