Do you often end up throwing away bread heels? It’s kind of annoying isn’t it. π¦ Such a waste of perfectly good food! Today, I am pleased to share with you my new favorite way to use up bread heels–making your own breadcrumbs! π
All you need is:
- The week’s bread heel collection
- A dehydrator (or oven)
- A food processor (or plastic bag and rolling pin)
- A mason jar
The process is so simple! First, take all your bread heels and lay them in a single layer on your dehydrator racks.

Set your dehydrator to 125 F for 3-4 hours… (I got the temperature and time settings from thehomesteadsurvival.com)
And grind it up! π You can do this by smashing the bread with a rolling pin inside a plastic bag, or by pulsing it in the food processor a few times.

Once they’re all smashed, pour em’ into a mason jar…

And you’re done! Enjoy your homemade bread crumbs! π
If you don’t have a dehydrator, there is a method for making these in the oven as well! I’m not sure what the temperature or time settings should be for the oven method, but I’m sure it’ll be a piece of cake to look up.
Hope this was helpful to you! π
