Here’s a recipe truly straight from the heart of Italy! It was created by my great-great grandmother, who was an immigrant from Italy in the early 1900’s.
Though it involves quite a bit more work than just opening up a store-bought jar of pasta sauce, the taste is just WORLDS better! π Plus, you get to know exactly what’s in it. π

Ingredients:
- 1 lb. sausage
- 3 chicken thighs
- 1 TBSP salt
- 1 TBSP basil
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 tsp. oregano
- 1 12 oz. can tomato paste
- 2 28 oz. cans diced tomatoes
- 1 29 oz. can tomato sauce
Let’s get cooking! π Brown the meat in a large pot with the spices, breaking into small chunks as you go.

Next, pour in your tomato paste; but don’t throw away the can! Fill it up 1 and 1/2 times with water and dump that in as well. Then let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

Once it’s done simmering, pour in your diced tomatoes and tomato sauce. Simmer for another 2 1/2 to 3 hours…

And pour liberally over your favorite Italian dish! π

I will note here–you don’t have to use the meats I’m using in the recipe here; you can use any kind of meat you want! It’s basically a flavoring agent, so the experimentation possibilities are endless!
